Farflung FAQ

Short answers to the questions players ask most about Farflung, the daily far flung geography game. If something isn't covered here, the how to play guide and the scoring page go into more detail.

Playing and scoring

What counts as a right answer?

Any country that fits the prompt. Each prompt has between 8 and 60 right answers, built from published country data. Overseas territories count for the country that governs them, so a pin on Greenland is a pin on Denmark.

How is rarity measured?

By how many players chose the same country. Before many people have played a prompt, the starting estimate comes from how often each country's Wikipedia article is read; as pins come in, real choices take over.

When does a new expedition start?

At midnight where you are. Everyone gets the same five prompts for the same date, whatever their time zone.

Why did my distance go up after I finished?

When a day has ended in every time zone, Farflung makes a final count of every pin. If your answer turned out rarer than it looked while you played, you get the extra distance. A final count never lowers a score.

Can I play an expedition I missed?

Yes. Any of the previous seven days can be played from the camp screen. Late expeditions are scored the same way but don't extend your streak.

What is Farflung Unlimited?

Practice runs of five prompts that you can play as often as you like, with or without the clock. Unlimited never uses upcoming daily prompts and never touches your streak.

What about Western Sahara and other disputed places?

Western Sahara is shown on the map but is not counted as any country. Other disputed areas follow the borders recognised by the United Nations, while Kosovo, Taiwan and Palestine are playable countries in their own right.

I think a country was wrongly marked as a miss. What can I do?

Use "Suggest a missing answer" at camp. Reports are reviewed every week; when a country is added, every player who pinned it gets the distance back.

Is Farflung free?

Yes. There are no accounts, no payments and no ads. Your stats are kept in your browser, and the game runs on a small server that keeps each day's pins so rarity can be measured.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Pinch to zoom the map, drag to move around, and use search for countries too small to tap. It works in any current browser on phones, tablets and computers.
