About Farflung

Farflung on farflung.online is an independent daily geography game. It is not affiliated with farflung.game or with any other game of a similar name. It belongs to a family of daily games where the obvious answer isn't the best one: the fun is in remembering the country nobody else thought of.

How the prompts are made

Every prompt is generated from published country data, then checked automatically: it must have between 8 and 60 right answers, no single answer may dominate, and at least one answer must be rare enough to reach the Farflung tier. Prompts cover regions, borders, flags, population, area, names and capitals, and the mountains, rivers, lakes, islands and cities each country has.

Data and credits

• Country facts, places and their countries: Wikidata (CC0) and the wormillion geography catalogue built from it.
• Country codes, borders and areas: mledoze/countries, under the Open Database License (ODbL 1.0).
• Map shapes: Natural Earth (public domain), via the world-atlas package.
• Starting rarity estimates: Wikimedia pageview statistics (CC0).
• Typeface: Barlow by Jeremy Tribby, under the SIL Open Font License.

Corrections

Published data has gaps. If a right answer was marked as a miss, use "Suggest a missing answer" at camp. Reports are reviewed every week, and when a country is added, everyone who pinned it gets the distance back.
